Natural wetlands in southeastern Australia commonly include a component of Phragmites australis (Common Reed), Typha spp. (Cumbungi) or Juncus ingens (Giant Rush). These tall macrophytes provide important habitat and ecosystem functions.
Determining when management is appropriate and justified, and the most effective methods to use in natural wetlands (where excavation is not an option) can be challenging. Many attempts to control these taxa have not been monitored, limiting the ability to share learnings.
Join Fiona Sutton, plant ecologist with Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, for an in-depth workshop on managing vegetation in these waterways. Fiona and her team have undertaken a literature review and held interviews and workshops with waterway managers and ecologists to synthesise the latest knowledge regarding the biology, ecology and management of these taxa.
