Freshwater turtles have declined by 60-90% across the Murray-Darling catchment. Foxes eat the vast majority of turtle eggs throughout the region, and in some areas, the predation pressure is so high that there are almost no young turtles left. At the same time, adult turtles are killed by cars when they try to cross roads while out to nest or moving across the landscape. The 1 million program provides training modules on how everyone can contribute to helping turtles in Australia, from recording turtle sightings on the TurtleSAT mobile phone app to protecting turtle nests directly.
