Friends of Willow Park and Planet Ark are inviting Albury Wodonga residents to take part in an exciting National Tree Day event, marking the 20th anniversary of this much-loved campaign.
With support from the State Government, though the Local Landscape Enhancement grant and support from the Wodonga Council, Friends of Willow Park is offering a wonderful community event for Albury-Wodonga residents.
“Celebrating Trees” will be held at Willow Park in Wodonga on Sunday, July 26, from 10am to 2 pm, with access to the event from the Pearce Street entrance to Willow Park at the Nordsvan Drive roundabout.
Activities include the primary purpose for everyone to plant and to improve the park’s bush corridor along House Creek. There will be 1000 native trees, grasses, ground covers and shrubs to be planted, with the area mulched and prepared for planting. Tools and instructions on the most successful methods will be provided native plants will be supplied.
Other activities will include:
- Sustainability workshops on worms farms, worm hotels and a home-made liquid fertiliser workshop at 10.15am; backyard chooks at 11.05 am; organic pest control at 12.15 pm; and “bee hotels” at 1.05pm. (Bookings are not required.)
- Family activities including a children’s tent and a yoga class for all.
- There will also be a barbecue, coffee and cake stalls.
- Information and demonstrations will add to the occasion.
- The Albury Wodonga Woodcrafters will display their skills, techniques and artefacts.
- Local environmental groups, community organisations, nurseries and others will also be available to provide valuable material to all, including the new Halve Waste system and gardening tips from the experts.
National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year more than 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at 3000 sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers across the country.
Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than three million participants have planted 21 million native trees, shrubs and grasses.
Albury City Council and Friends of Padman Park are also hosting National Tree day planting events.
