SUMMARY:Buffalo plateau wander
DESCRIPTION:The Buffalo plateau in north eastern Victoria is an ‘island in the sky’. It is geographically separated from the high mountains along the Great Dividing Range\, and is a refuge for mountain species\, with Alpine Ash forests\, snow gum woodlands and open frost hollow plains. \nAs part of the Friends of the Earth forests campaigns we host guided walks in the Victorian high country. This trip to the Buffalo plateau will be the first one for summer 2025/26. \nJoin us for a one day wander on the plateau to explore some of the remnant Ash and snow gum forests that survived the intense fires of the 2000s. \nWe will meet at Lake Catani campground at 9am on sunday November 16\, and do two 2 hour walks to explore sections of remnant and recovering forests. \nYou would be welcome to camp with us at Lake Catani on the sunday night and join our collaboration with Protect our Winters on the monday: a tree planting and film night. Details here.

SUMMARY:Snow Gum summit
DESCRIPTION:Snow Gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) are the classic tree of the Australian High Country. They are profoundly different to the trees found in mountain areas in other parts of the world\, and give a uniquely Australian sense to our high country. However\, they are facing a double threat to their survival: from fire and dieback. \nWe are hosting a ‘snow gum summit’ which will bring together land managers and academics and anyone interested in the future of this iconic species to explore what needs to be done to ensure the survival of snow gum woodlands\, and put the issue firmly on the state governments agenda. \nWe will be inviting First Nations people\, local and state wide environmental organisations\, local communities and businesses\, groups active in outdoors recreation\, and enthusiasts of high-elevation\, forest ecosystems.  There will be presentations\, workshops and field trips.

SUMMARY:Indi Volunteer Event 11 August
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Volunteers – We need you.   \nOur Alpine forests are under immediate threat.    We have big plans for future work\, but we can’t do it without you. \nFriends of the Earth Forest Collective are holding a ‘meet and greet’ event at the Freeburgh Community Hall on Saturday the 11th of August approx 1-3 pm. \nThe event will be hosted by Cam Walker\, Campaigns Cordinator for FoE. \nIf you’d like to join us please get in touch and we will send you the agenda and location details. \nContact Sanja     sanja.vanhuet@foe.org.au \nMore details below. \nIn recent years Friends of the Earth has been deeply involved in a range of issues in northeastern Victoria. We wrote the report An Icon at Risk\, Current and Emerging threats to the Victorian High Country in 2021 (available here)\, have hosted forums such as this one on fire and climate change in 2022\, organised guided walks and camps\, carried out citizen surveys of areas that had been scheduled for logging\, lobbied for protection of forests\, engaged with traditional owner groups\, and much more. We set up FoE North East VIC Alps as a forum for this work to develop. \nThis is your chance to get involved? : \n\nHelp us with organising a vital fund raising auction at Bright Brewery on September 8\nHelp us with planning to host a ‘snow gum summit’ at Dinner Plain in mid February next year. We already have a great range of speakers lined up for this event\nHelp us to engage deeply in the Great Outdoors Task force process that is being run by the state government to determine the future of public land forests in the north east\, and\nHelp us establish a long term monitoring program to track the recovery of snow gum forests that have been impacted by repeat fires\n\nWe are hosting a volunteers meeting at Freeburgh Hall to explain what we’re doing and how you can get involved. \nFoE campaigners will be present to walk you through our plans and what you can do to help save our Alps.

SUMMARY:Walk to the Little Dargo
DESCRIPTION:The fires of 2019/20 burnt huge areas of north eastern Victoria. The remaining unburnt forests are more important than ever. One of these areas lies in the headwaters of the Little Dargo River\, just south of Mt Hotham. It is a pristine area\, without roads\, and containing mature forest\, much of it dominated by Mountain Gums and Alpine Ash. It is an area of state forest that lies right next to the Alpine National Park. \nThe state government logging agency\, VicForests\, intends to log a total of 11 “coupes”\, or sections\, of mature forest in the upper Little Dargo River. These coupes are located in a series of clusters\, where separate sections of bush will be harvested\, creating a large zone of cleared land over time. Extensive roading networks will be needed to access the coupes. \nThere is a growing community campaign to oppose this destruction. In 2022 and 2023\, Friends of the Earth\, in conjunction with the Treasure family\, who have grazed cattle on the Dargo High Plains for generations\, have hosted a number of walks to show people the headwaters of the catchment and surrounding area. Over the cup weekend (November 4 – 7) we will be hosting another free guided walk. \nThe exact start point will be sent to those who rsvp. It is about a 40 min drive south of Mt Hotham.\nmelbournefoe.org.au/walk_to_the_little_dargo
