Sadly\, 619 of these Australian animals are threatened species\, losing their homes to habitat destruction and climate change every single day.  The Sloane’s Froglet\, the Freckled Duck\, the Gang-Gang Cockatoo\, and the Murray Cod are a few examples of endangered species in the Albury Wodonga region. \nIn May 2026\, we’ll be taking on the Australia’s Biggest Bushwalk challenge yet again and raising funds to help bring our beloved animals back from the brink and enjoying the company of like-minded people and being in nature. \nJoin us! RSVP now! \nWhen:  Saturday 30 May\, 10.00 am to 12.00 pm followed by a BYO picnic lunch\nWhere:  Wonga Wetlands\, 2377 Riverina Highway\, Splitters Creek\, 2640\nWhat: Walk one or more of the trails in this map – 0.5 km (green trail)\, 1.2 km (blue trail) or 2.5 km (red trail) or join Rowena and Roy on the Wagirra Trail (12 km). SUMMARY:Films to inspire climate action with guest speaker Paul Sinclair\, ACF Campaign Director and Deputy CEO
DESCRIPTION:We are feeling a bit overwhelmed with the news lately and we expect you may be feeling that also. \nAs Joan Baez famously stated – Action is the antidote to despair – so we’re always looking for the most impactful ways we can act and support you to act also. \nWe do feel we are all best acting inside our sphere of influence by acting locally while thinking globally.  However\, sometimes\, we need to extend our range a little.  This is one of those times. \nWe wrote to you on 14 September about the importance of acting to save Scott Reef that is potentially impacted by the proposed Browse Basin development as part of Woodside’s North West Shelf extension and expansion.  We included in that email the ABC News article by Rhiannon Shine from 13 September 2025 titled North West Shelf extension comes at critical juncture in Australia’s climate conversation.  We are\, indeed\, at a critical juncture.  Your ACF-AWR has continued to monitor this situation and we want to raise further awareness and inspire you to act also.  So\, we’re holding an event and we hope you can join us: \nWhere: Hybrid event: CD Blake Lecture Theatre\, Building 751 (see map)\, Charles Sturt University\, Elizabeth Mitchell Drive/Milawa Drive\, Thurgoona\, NSW\, 2640 or online (RSVP to receive the link to join)\nWhen: Saturday 25 October\, 2 – 4 pm\nWhat: Two compelling short films – Dr Richard Denniss (30 mins) and Corals’ Last Stand (38 mins) \nDr Richard Denniss is a prominent economist and Executive Director of the Australia Institute.  In this short (30 min) film\, he presents our Federal Government with a reality check in a candid address before the Federal Senate Environment Committee. \nCorals’ Last Stand is a multi-award-winning documentary about Scott Reef\, one of our last ancient interconnected coral ecosystems located nearly 300km from the WA north-west coast\, which has recently come under serious threat from Woodside Energy’s Gas expansion this year. \nWe are also thrilled to have Paul Sinclair\, ACF Campaign Director and Deputy CEO join us for a follow-up discussion. \nTea and coffee will be available for those attending the face-to-face event. \nRSVP as soon as possible so you don’t miss securing your seat. \nPlease email acf.awr@gmail.com if you are attending in person for catering purposes. \nWe look forward to seeing you soon. \nBart\, Ali\, Jonathon and your ACF-AWR team.

SUMMARY:Platy-Project Field Event 6 September 2025\, 4 - 6 pm
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever had that magical moment of spotting a platypus in the wild? \nJoin us at this event to learn where to look for\, and how spot\, platypus in the wild for this great #CitizenScience project\, a partnership with great ACF\, UNSW\, Centre for Ecosystem Science\, and Platypus Conservation Initiative. \nACF-AWR is excited to be hosting events again in 2025 for the wonderful citizen science platy-project. \nThis is our first field event and the first of our field events for this year.  Our second field event is scheduled for 13 September\, 4 – 6 pm. \nJoin us and help researchers understand more about this elusive animal and how we can better protect it. \nWhen: 6 September\, 4 – 6 pm \nWhere: Willow Park\, Car Park\, Pearce Street\, Wodonga\, VIC. \nWhat we’ll be doing: \n\nWe’ll talk through the best ways to spot a platypus and how to not get tricked by other creatures;\nWe’ll practise our platy spotting skills with a walk around the creek to identify the best platy spotting habitat; and\nWe’ll also net and look at the water bugs to see what platypus food is in the area.\n\nYou may want to then invest time to watch and wait for a platypus to reveal itself at the end of the event.  We’ve been watching platypus in the area recently. \nWe can’t promise you will see a platypus\, but you’ll be well equipped to keep looking for platypus at your nearest river or creek to help researchers understand more about this incredible creature and help prevent further declines in their numbers. \nJoin us at our upcoming platy-project event!   \nRSVP as soon as possible so you don’t miss out.  Places are limited to ensure the event is safe and the best experience for all of us. \nImage: Young platypus on a log in McMahons Creek\, Yarra Ranges\, Victoria. SUMMARY:ACF Sydney online screening of 'Corals' Last Stand' film
DESCRIPTION:As you are probably aware\, the new federal Environment Minister\, Murray Watt\, has recently approved an extension of the Woodside gas production facility near Karratha in Western Australia for 40 years\, until 2070. This is an appalling decision but our attention now needs to turn to stopping Woodside’s proposal to drill for gas in the Browse Basin near Scott Reef. If we can do that\, we will significantly reduce the supply of gas to the Karratha facility. \nScott Reef is a truly magical place\, home to a wide variety of marine life including pygmy blue whales and green turtles.  And it will be under serious threat if drilling at Browse Basin goes ahead. Corals’ Last Stand is a beautiful film about Scott Reef and how important it is that it be protected. \nACF AWR\, ACF GWS and other groups are hoping that the film will help build a movement in the communities of Greater Western Sydney\, and in other places across Australia\, in support of effective nature protection and an end to approving new and expanded fossil fuel projects. \nOn Monday 28 July at 7.30pm\, ACF Greater Western Sydney Community Group is hosting an online screening of the film Corals’ Last Stand.  ACF AWR and other groups will also be participating in this screening. We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful film. \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:ACF-AWR Planning Together for 2025\, F2F and Online – hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us at your ACF-AWR planning meeting for 2025.  We would love to have your thoughts and ideas! \nWhen: 15 February 2024\, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm \nWhere:  Hyphen\, Meeting Room 1\, 126 Hovell St\, Wodonga\, VIC\, 3690 and Online (hybrid event) \nThe purpose of the meeting is to plan your group’s focus for the year ahead and particularly the coming Federal election. \nAs ACF Australia notes on their Community Hub:  As we hit the halfway mark of this critical decade for solving the climate and extinction crisis\, we must harness all of our power to engage the wider community and demand our next Parliament acts urgently. \nACF have a number of resources on their Community Hub including their National Agenda For Australia’s Nature and Climate that lays out exactly what the next parliament must do to the solve the dual climate and extinction crisis: \n\nProtect nature: Stop the bulldozing of the bush\nSay yes to renewable energy: Power everything we can with clean\, cheap energy from wind and sun.\nSay no to nuclear: Australia’s future is renewable\, not radioactive\nSay no to new coal and gas: No more green lights for big\, climate-wrecking coal and gas polluters\n\nThe National Agenda provides a summary of the issues and a clear action plan to address them that we hope community and Parliament will get behind. \nOther actions you can take: \n\nLet candidates know you care and will vote for nature and climate. You can take this pledge\, which will notify your sitting MP that you have committed to voting for nature and climate.\nYou can also use the community pulse as a tool for deep persuasive conversations and ask people to pledge to vote for nature and climate at stalls and events.\nShare the pledge and the community pulse tool with your networks.\n\nFor those wishing to join us after the meeting for a chat with like-minded people\, head to Elgins\, 51 – 53 Elgin Boulevard\, Wodonga. \nRSVP as soon as possible to help with catering. \nWe look forward to seeing you soon!  And\, yes\, we’ll have some refreshments for those attending Hyphen.\n \nIMPORTANT:  Please email us at acf.awr@gmail.com to let us know how you would like to attend.  If you are attending in person we can cater for you.  If you are attending online\, we’ll send the link to join. \nRegards\, \nACF-AWR Team
