SUMMARY:Paradise Island Community Stewardship Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Parklands Rangers undertaking a variety of practical conservation works on our patch of paradise. Our neighbours call this Paradise Island! 8km of the 9km circuit around this Island\, to the east of Gateway Island\, was fenced and revegetated a decade ago\, providing quality habitat for many native fauna species. \nLearn how to remove the invasive plant species threatening this high conservation Murray River island. This is an opportunity to work alongside our Rangers experiencing the ‘how to’ of caring for our local bush. No experience is necessary – our Rangers will help with plant identification and removal techniques. \nTake in the fresh air\, get close to nature\, and learn about the local environment and how our community are working to protect threatened species\, improve habitat\, and link habitat corridors across the region. \nWe will be tackling privet\, box elder\, wild tobacco\, and plenty more species. You will become an expert in pest plant identification! These works are in preparation for reafforestation in future years. \nWhen: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (4 hrs). \nWhere: Carpool from the corner of Huon Street and Church Street\, Wodonga. Please arrive on time as we will leave at 9 am sharp. \nWhat is supplied: All tools and any specific safety equipment needed. \nWhat to bring: BYO drinking water. For your safety\, please wear covered shoes (preferably boots)\, long pants\, long sleeves\, and a hat. \nWho: Queries to Tilak 0421 278 246 \nPlease register here! Sometimes things change at the last minute and we need to be able to contact volunteers. Please note that these sessions run EVERY MONDAY FROM SEPT 30 THROUGH TO NOV 25. Make sure you click on the correct date when registering. \nThank you to the Victorian Government for financial support through the Bushbank Program.

SUMMARY:MONTHLY REPAIR CAFE HASTINGS WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:The Repair Cafe is a place where skilled volunteers fix\, repair and mend household & personal items for reuse or repurpose. This helps pass on special skills and keeps the circular economy going in the community and items out of landfill. We are a not-for-profit community organisation which relies on kind donations from the community to also keep us going. Kids activities and light refreshments are available as part of the Repair Cafe services. We are currently running just one session per month (usually on the third Sunday of each month) at The Hastings Community Hub. We have a great group of volunteers but are also seeking more volunteers to assist in all areas of operating the Repair Cafe (on site and behind the scenes) as our visitor numbers grow. Training provided. Please inquire if interested in helping out or attending one of our next repair sessions – we would love to meet you!

SUMMARY:John Paul Memorial Lecture - Deep nature connection: caring for nature in crisis
DESCRIPTION:‘We cannot protect something we do not love\, we cannot love what we do not know\, and we cannot know what we do not see. Or hear. Or sense’ – Louv. \nNature needs us more than ever – and we need nature. As we face the increasing biodiversity crisis fuelled by environmental destruction and climate change\, deepening our connection with nature is vital. By deepening our understanding of nature\, we can better protect it. \nHow do we encourage more people to connect with nature? How do we inspire people to care? And how does this relate to private land conservation and restoration efforts across Victoria and Australia more broadly? \nOn 17 October\, 7pm AEST\, join us for a free webinar on Zoom to hear from three experts whose work focuses on human-nature connection: Lily van Eeden\, Claire Dunn and Fiona Murdoch.
