SUMMARY:ACF-AWR Platy Project Event 2 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever had that magical moment of spotting a platypus in the wild? \nJoin us at this event to learn where to look for\, and how spot\, platypus in the wild for this great ACF/UNSW #CitizenScience project. \nWe were so sorry to have to postpone our Platy-Project event on 23 September and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.  We now have 2 more events – 30 September 4 – 5.30 pm and 7 October 5 – 6.30 pm (this event)- and we hope you can join us. \nWe’re thrilled to be involved in the ACF and University of NSW citizen science Platy-Project again in 2023. \nJoin us and help researchers understand more about this elusive animal and how we can better protect it. \nWhen: 7 October\, 5 – 6.30 pm \nWhere: Willow Park\, Car Park\, Pearce Street\, Wodonga\, VIC. \nWhat we’ll be doing: \n\nWe’ll talk through the best ways to spot a platypus and how to not get tricked by other creatures.\nWe’ll practise our platy spotting skills with a walk around the creek to identify the best platy spotting habitat.\nWe’ll also net and look at the water bugs to see what platypus food is in the area.\n\nYou may want to then invest time to watch and wait for a platypus to reveal itself at the end of the event.  We’ve been watching platypus in the area recently. \nWe can’t promise you will see a platypus\, but you’ll be well equipped to keep looking for platypus at your nearest river or creek to help researchers understand more about this incredible creature and help prevent further declines in their numbers. \nJoin us at our upcoming platy-project event!  \nRSVP for 7 October as soon as possible so you don’t miss out.  Places are limited to ensure the event is safe and the best experience for all of us. \nImage: Young platypus on a log in McMahons Creek\, Yarra Ranges\, Victoria. SUMMARY:Lots about nestboxes
DESCRIPTION:Come and find out why you should consider putting up nest boxes – they can be put up in urban areas too. We will look at Wooragee Landcare’s nest box program and hear what animals have been observed using the boxes.  Nest boxes are one of the tools we can use to increase habitat for wildlife and is a great activity to get younger people involved in Landcare activities. \nThe topics we will cover are: \n\nWhy nestboxes are good\nAn overview of the group’s nest box locations\, and data recording.\nResults of recent monitoring and discussion of the species we have found using the boxes.\nInformation on arboreal (tree dwelling) mammals including some of the threatened species in our area.\nDetails on current knowledge of box designs and specifications\, including recent innovations in thermally efficient box design. We will have prices and contact details for purchasing.\nHow to maintain boxes and common problems associated with nest box projects.\n\nWe will also showcase some of the latest monitoring camera technology (pole camera) and inspect some of the boxes located in the primary school reserve. \nOur presenter Jim Blackney has been involved in nest box projects throughout the North East and is co-author of the “Nest Box Guide for North East Victoria” produced by Swamps Rivers and Ranges. \nThe first part of the session will be in the hall\, then afternoon tea\, and the second part next door looking at the nest boxes in the school grounds. \nWear strong covered in shoes. Keep warm or cool and shaded depending on the weather. A cuppa and afternoon tea will be provided. \nBooking essential: events.humanitix.com/lots-about-nest-boxes \nFor more information call Jim 0459 622 260

SUMMARY:A Slow Early Spring Nature Walk with Sue Brunskill & Karen Retra
DESCRIPTION:Join passionate naturalists Sue Brunskill and Karen Retra for a slow early Spring nature walk in one of Wodonga’s best bush reserves. \nCome exploring with Sue and Karen and be inspired by their knowledge and enthusiasm for nature from wildflowers\, insects and fungi to trees\, birds and wildlife. \nThis is the first of our Spring walks in this reserve – the season changes so quickly and there is always something new to see. We’ll compare our findings with the previous Winter seasonal walk – you’ll be amazed at what’s changed in a few short months. \nWhere: Meet at Castle Creek Bushlands access off Castle Creek Rd. \nGoogle map: goo.gl/maps/TjytEF1aSseYcpiN7 \nWhat to expect: As usual\, you are in for a treat in this special reserve\, with early spring wildflowers already out and birds busy making nests… Expect to focus on the ‘slow’ and ‘nature’ rather than the walk – exercise is not the priority!  Please be aware that we will be walking on slopes\, on a natural\, unpaved and possibly wet surface. \nWhat to bring: Please bring your water bottle\, wear covered shoes and dress for the weather. Welcome to bring your camera\, binoculars etc. \nRegistration prior to the event is essential for communication\, safety and insurance purposes. \n REGISTER HERE
