SUMMARY:The Secret Life of Mistletoe
DESCRIPTION:Mistletoe — often dismissed as destructive or invasive — has a far more fascinating story to tell. Join us for an intriguing evening with Prof Dave Watson as he shares thirty years of research uncovering just how vital these plants are for woodland birds and urban ecosystems across southern Australia. \nDave is an ecologist based at CSU’s Gulbali Institute\, where he develops evidence-based strategies to boost biodiversity. His long-term research into mistletoe reveals its critical role in maintaining diverse and functional ecosystems throughout regional NSW. \nThis is a free event\, but registrations are essential by Monday 1 June. \nReserve your spot at: events.humanitix.com/the-secret-life-of-mistletoe \nThis event is hosted by Gardens 4 Wildlife Albury-Wodonga\, a Wodonga Urban Landcare Network program\, with generous support from AlburyCity. \nFor more information contact Jess Robinson at g4w@wodongalandcare.org.au

SUMMARY:Long-range Hawkweed Searching on the Bogong High Plains
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone\,Following our week-long grid surveys during the summer\, we are planning on running a 3 day\, long-range survey for the state-prohibited Hawkweed.\n\n\n\n\n\nDates: 30th of March to the 1st of April.Recommended arrival on Sunday afternoon/evening (29th)Monday: 8:30am Meeting/Briefing.Aim to start the survey at 9am each day\, with a flexible finish time around 3pm.Departure: Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning (2nd).At this stage\, the plan is to base camp at Pretty Valley due to its proximity to areas of Mouse-Ear Hawkweed and also the potential to explore up into areas of Rocky Knobs for King Devil and Orange Hawkweed.Long-range surveys are a little different to the intensive line searches of 1-hectare grids that volunteers usually assist with. Long-range searches have been conducted in the past to explore and search across larger areas of the landscape\, around and beyond where computer modelling has placed formal grids.Long-range surveys are often carried out over several kilometres\, through a variety of terrain that may at times be steep\, densely vegetated and rocky\, requiring a good level of fitness and health. It’s important to note that this is a campout\, not an accommodation session. If it’s too wet and rainy\, we may have to decide against running the session. Please email: hawkweederadication.volunteer@gmail.com for signup and additional information.

SUMMARY:Buffalo plateau wander
DESCRIPTION:The Buffalo plateau in north eastern Victoria is an ‘island in the sky’. It is geographically separated from the high mountains along the Great Dividing Range\, and is a refuge for mountain species\, with Alpine Ash forests\, snow gum woodlands and open frost hollow plains. \nAs part of the Friends of the Earth forests campaigns we host guided walks in the Victorian high country. This trip to the Buffalo plateau will be the first one for summer 2025/26. \nJoin us for a one day wander on the plateau to explore some of the remnant Ash and snow gum forests that survived the intense fires of the 2000s. \nWe will meet at Lake Catani campground at 9am on sunday November 16\, and do two 2 hour walks to explore sections of remnant and recovering forests. \nYou would be welcome to camp with us at Lake Catani on the sunday night and join our collaboration with Protect our Winters on the monday: a tree planting and film night. Details here.
