SUMMARY:Moving to Higher Ground: Lessons from Grantham and across the globe
DESCRIPTION:This public lecture is a free community event hosted by North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA)\, La Trobe University – Albury-Wodonga\, and Wise Water Ways. \nRefreshments will be served. \n\nJamie Simmonds (pictured) is an internationally renowned expert in the field of managed retreat and community relocation. \nIn 2011\, Jamie directed the relocation of Grantham\, an Australian town left devastated by catastrophic flash flooding that tragically claimed the lives of 19 people. Within 12 months more than 100 families were transitioned to new homes situated on higher ground surrounding Grantham. \nIn 2020\, Jamie documented the story in his book about the Grantham experience to show communities the positives and challenges associated with community relocation. \nJamie is presently engaged in a community relocation program in northern NSW\, based in Lismore. This follows the region’s devastating flooding in 2022. \nTickets: https://events.humanitix.com/moving-to-higher-ground
