SUMMARY:Huon Creek Landcare – An information evening
DESCRIPTION:Huon Creek is a significant waterway traversing agricultural and urban areas in the Wodonga municipality. The creek and surrounding hills have historically been impacted land clearing and now face increasing pressure from residential development and climate change which has altered natural flow patterns and elevated runoff. These pressures mean erosion\, water quality\, increased sediment loads and weeds threaten the ecological integrity of the riparian corridor and surrounding hills. \nRecent planting events have peaked community interest in Landcare in the Huon Creek area both in the newer urban areas and rural areas. \nJoin Wodonga Council staff and Wodonga Urban Landcare for a presentation on the important ecological values of the Huon Creek area\, learn more about the WREN (Wodonga Retained Environment Network) and how you can get involved in protecting and maintaining your local environment including planting\, weeding\, nest box installation through Landcare. \nPlease register: events.humanitix.com/huon-creek-landcare-info-evening \nThe event will be held at our Landcare Office and Ecohub at Baranduda Fields.\nDirections for how to get to the Ecohub can be viewed here.

We’ll discuss the community members and Landcare groups who help look after these special places. \nWe hope you’ll be inspired to care for these places and species\, or perhaps to incorporate these plants and wildlife as part of your own garden. \nLed by Karen Retra from Wodonga Urban Landcare Network\, known for her enthusiasm for invertebrates\, and Kim Radnell\, a local Landcare volunteer whose deep knowledge of the reserve’s plants comes from her love of conservation and extensive local experience. \nSuitable for all ages — adults and children welcome. \nCome along\, get curious\, and see what you can find. \n  \n📍 Meeting place: the Axford Boulevard entrance to Jack Perry Reserve. See on Google maps. \n👟 What to wear/bring: Enclosed shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, water bottle\, hat and sunscreen; phone or camera optional. \n🎟️ RSVP: Places are limited – please register: events.humanitix.com/wildflowers26 \nThis event is hosted by Wodonga Urban Landcare Network as part of the Gardens for Wildlife Albury Wodonga program and supported by the Victorian Government through the Victorian Landcare Grants Program.

SUMMARY:Healing Huon Creek: A Riparian Restoration Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Wodonga Urban Landcare Network (WULN)\, North East Catchment Management Authority and Water Technology on World Rivers Day for a hands-on field event exploring the historical and emerging impacts on Huon Creek and outline the recently developed restoration plan for the site which is part of a vital rural/urban waterway corridor within Wodonga’s Retained Environment Network (WREN). \nHear from Jamie Kaye\, Senior Principal Scientist at Water Technology\, as he shares insights into hydrology\, erosion processes\, and best-practice riparian restoration along this significant creekline. Huon Creek supports Creekline Grassy Woodland\, a threatened vegetation community and faces mounting pressure from erosion\, sediment loads\, weed encroachment\, and residential development. \nThis event is part of the Healing Huon Creek project\, delivered by WULN in partnership with North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) and Wodonga Council\, continuing the implementation of the Wodonga Regional Waterway Action Plan. \nCome along to learn about the science behind waterway health\, the restoration plan for this site\, and explore how you can get involved in protecting this important wildlife corridor. \nWhere: Huon Creek Road\, Wodonga. See google map for reserve entrance. \nPlease register: events.humanitix.com/healing-huon-creek \nThis project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Victorian Landcare Grants Program.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Wodonga Urban Landcare Network’s Annual General Meeting and Network Gathering at our Baranduda Fields EcoHub. \nThis is an opportunity to reflect on the past year’s achievements\, hear about exciting projects and plans for the year ahead\, and connect with the people helping to care for and improve our local environment. \nWe will also be welcoming Albury City Council’s Leah Warburton – Urban Forest Officer and Leanne Hunichen – Supervisor Trees and Streetscapes to present on the newly adopted Urban Forest Strategy which charts a greener future for Albury. The strategy outlines the current challenges with regard to canopy cover in Albury and provides a guide to tree planting and detailed implementation plan as the city responds to climate change and ongoing urban growth\, setting a target for 30% urban tree canopy cover in Albury by 2050. \nAll WULN members\, supporters\, partner organisations and friends are welcome to attend\, as well as members of the community – you don’t need to be a WULN member. \nGroup coordinators will be asked to vote in the special meeting and AGM and should nominate a proxy if they are unable to attend. \nFollowing the AGM\, stay for a relaxed network gathering with plenty of time to catch up\, share ideas\, and connect with others who are passionate about creating a healthier\, more sustainable community. \nA light lunch will be provided. For catering purposes\, please register if you plan to attend. \nWe look forward to celebrating another year of community-driven environmental action with you. 🌿

SUMMARY:Waterway Ecology Workshops – Managing Tall Vegetation
DESCRIPTION:Natural wetlands in southeastern Australia commonly include a component of Phragmites australis (Common Reed)\, Typha spp. (Cumbungi) or Juncus ingens (Giant Rush). These tall macrophytes provide important habitat and ecosystem functions. \nDetermining when management is appropriate and justified\, and the most effective methods to use in natural wetlands (where excavation is not an option) can be challenging. Many attempts to control these taxa have not been monitored\, limiting the ability to share learnings. \nJoin Fiona Sutton\, plant ecologist with Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research\, for an in-depth workshop on managing vegetation in these waterways. Fiona and her team have undertaken a literature review and held interviews and workshops with waterway managers and ecologists to synthesise the latest knowledge regarding the biology\, ecology and management of these taxa. \nWhen: Wednesday 30 September\nPublic session (eg members of local Landcare groups\, neighbouring landholders etc) – 1.30pm to 5pm\nWhere: Wodonga Landcare Ecohub at Baranduda Fields \n  \nPlease register at events.humanitix.com/baranduda-manage-tall-marsh-workshops \nThese free public and waterways managers’ workshops are hosted in partnership between North East CMA\, Wodonga Urban Landcare Network\, Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability Inc and Arthur Rylah Institute.

SUMMARY:Street Harvest
DESCRIPTION:The Street Harvest project is being reinvigorated – Please consider growing an extra row of produce in your garden to support this project and Uniting in Wodonga. \nAll produce can be dropped off at Uniting (1 Nilmar Avenue\, Wodonga between. 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Monday to Friday). \nThe project builds and encourages community capacity and improves food security for Wodonga residents by distributing excess fruit and vegetables\, harvested from residential gardens\, to local residents and emergency food relief agencies. \n‘Street Harvest’ was a pilot project developed in Wodonga in 2010. The Street Harvest Project grew out of a passion for transforming the local food system into one that is sustainable and strong.
