SUMMARY:Australia’s Biggest Bushwalk
DESCRIPTION:We love nature!  So we’re getting active in nature to help protect Australia’s iconic wildlife. \nDid you know that over 80% of Australia’s animals are found nowhere else other than in our very own big backyard? Sadly\, 619 of these Australian animals are threatened species\, losing their homes to habitat destruction and climate change every single day.  The Sloane’s Froglet\, the Freckled Duck\, the Gang-Gang Cockatoo\, and the Murray Cod are a few examples of endangered species in the Albury Wodonga region. \nIn May 2025\, we’ll be taking on the Australia’s Biggest Bushwalk challenge and raising funds to help bring our beloved animals back from the brink. \nJoin us!  RSVP now!\n \nWhen:  Saturday 17 May\, 10.00 am to 12.00 pm followed by a BYO picnic lunch \nWhere:  Wonga Wetlands\, 2377 Riverina Highway\, Splitters Creek\, 2640 \nWhat: Walk one or more of the trails in this map – 0.5 km (green trail)\, 1.2 km (blue trail) or 2.5 km (red trail).  Walk as little or as much as you like. \nWe’ll enjoy a BYO picnic lunch after our walk and please join us for a chat and an enjoyable time with like-minded people. \nWhat to bring:  Your lunch\, something to drink (no alcohol)\, clothes suitable for the weather\, closed shoes\, sunscreen\, mosquito repellent \nOther things you may like to bring:  A chair\, binoculars\, camera \nWhat you can’t bring:  Your dog or your bicycle (to protect the wildlife) \nOther actions you can take: \n\nSponsor our team to help us reach our fundraising goal\nSign up to the Australia’s Biggest Bushwalk and take the challenge yourself or create a team of friends or colleagues\nCheck ACF’s Save Our Big Backyard web page for information and resources\n\nWe look forward to seeing you.  RSVP now!

SUMMARY:Reading the Fungal Landscape: Mushroom Identification & Fungal Ecology Foray
DESCRIPTION:Relative to plants and animals\, the diversity and significance of fungi is little known. Yet fungi are vital in creating and stabilising soils\, nourishing and interconnecting plants\, recycling nutrients\, retaining and filtering water\, restoring environmental damage and essentially underpinning ecosystem health and resilience. \nThis workshop\, led by acclaimed mycologist Alison Pouliot\, includes both an indoor session around a specimen table followed by a field foray. The workshop introduces participants to the diversity of the Kingdom Fungi and the basic principles of fungus identification and fungal ecology. \nYou’ll learn how to identify fungi using the senses\, field guides and other resources. In particular\, we will explore the functional roles of fungi in various ecosystem types and different approaches to incorporating them in conservation\, land management\, biodiversity monitoring and bush regeneration. \nEven when fungi aren’t producing mushrooms\, their ‘tracks and traces’ are present in the environment. We’ll examine various habitat types like old wood\, living trees and soils to look for clues of the processes and functions performed by fungi in the environment. What do they tell us about tree and ecosystem health? Which are indicators of old growth?\nAnd how do fungi respond to fire\, soil compaction and other environmental stresses? You’ll get to do the detective work to ‘read’ the environment through a fungal lens! \nParticipants are welcome to bring fungus specimens to the workshop for identification. \nTickets: $60 \nBookings: events.humanitix.com/fungi25 \nWe have two fungi workshops with Alison Pouliot at Wooragee over the 17 & 18 May weekend.\nSee the Humanitix listing for details and bookings of both. \nThis event is supported by Wodonga Urban Landcare Network\, Wooragee Landcare group\, and Mid Ovens Landcare Consortium\, for their members and communities.
