LOCAL GREEN HOME OPENS TO PUBLIC
Sustainable House Day Sunday, 16th September, 2018
“For the last fourteen years we have been enjoying an increasingly sustainable lifestyle in the passive design house we designed and built ourselves. We have been passionate about passive and sustainable living for many years and we wish to share the experience of actually living “the good life” with others.
The house and garden nestle into the landscape enabling us to not only save money but live in timeless style and comfort. The design and materials used lead to a long term , low carbon footprint by means of low maintenance, ease of cleaning, durability and energy efficiency. The vegetable garden with its wicking and raised beds, the landscaped in orchard, the chickens and the fruit groves and small vineyard supply our healthy, economical lifestyle, while the low maintenance garden helps create a mini sub-tropical oasis where there was once a dry, hot and dusty gully. “
Sustainable House Day will be opening homes to the public on Sunday, September 16 near you.
Established in 2001, Sustainable House Day is a national event that allows the public to see and learn from the best environmental homes in Australia. It aims to inspire people to live sustainably, showing them how to lower energy bills, live comfortably and help the environment through good home design, practices and technology.
Join more than 200 homeowners nationwide in opening their homes to the community to pass on tips and advice, including on solar power, home batteries, off-grid living, innovative building materials and design, and more.
Sustainable House Day is a valuable resource for anyone looking for practical information on sustainable homes: what works, what doesn’t and how to move towards ‘greener’ living.
Sustainable House Day 2016 won the United Nations Association of Australia’s Climate Action Award for Climate Education and Engagement.
Homes will be open to the general public from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, September 16th. A profile on each of the homes and their sustainable credentials can be found here: https://sustainablehouseday.com/find-a-sustainable-house/
