On 14 February 2019, the Senate referred the Export Control Amendment (Banning Exports to Ensure Water Security) Bill 2019 to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 12 August 2019.
The Bill seeks to amend the Export Control Act 1982 to prohibit the export of cotton grown in Australia to ensure water and food security in the Murray-Darling Basin. The production of cotton for use in Australia will not be affected. The Committee invites people to make a submission addressing all or some of the issues identified in the Bill. The closing date for submissions to the inquiry is 8 April 2019.
